Imphal, October 31 2023:
Even as the Government has claimed that the law and order has improved in Manipur, a senior police officer has been killed in Moreh.
Manipur's situation has degraded to a level where even the security forces aren't feeling safe, said MPCC president MLA K Meghachandra.
The broad daylight shooting and killing of police officer Chingtham Anandkumar in Moreh town has laid bare the complete failure of the BJP Government and lawlessness in some districts in the hills, he said, speaking to reporters at a press meet at Congress Bhavan.
Chingtham Anandkumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Moreh, was shot dead by a suspected sniper of Kuki militants today at the border town.
As news of the incident reached Imphal, people thronged the streets and many organisations came out with condolence messages and strong condemnations against the killing.
Bharatiya Janata Party, Manipur Pradesh and Like Minded Ten Political Parties which include AAP, AIFB, AITC, CPI, CPI(M), INC, JD(U), NCP, RSP, SS(UBT) have condoled Chingtham Anandkumar and vehemently condemned the killing of the officer.
Condemning the killing vehemently, displaced people of Moreh thronged the National Highway at Wangjing-Heirok Lamkhai.
They urged the Government to send in additional forces in Moreh.
Hundreds of displaced people of Moreh are staying at relief camps opened at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex and Lamding Higher Secondary School.
Meanwhile, at the press meet held at Congress Bhavan, MPCC president K Meghachandra expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and said Congress party condemns the killing in the strongest terms.
Meghachandra said Chingtham Anandkumar was a fine police officer who performed his duties with satisfaction.
The officer was brave and he sacrificed his life for Manipur's integrity.
The Government has been claiming that the law and order situation in Manipur has improved and peace is being restored.
What has happened in Moreh today has shown otherwise, he said.
The fatal shooting of Chingtham Anandkumar in Moreh has shown that there is no law and order and administration in some districts in the hills.
The Government has completely failed in maintaining law and order in the State, said Meghachandra.
"There has been a complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur since May 3.The situation has been such that there is no Government in Manipur.
BJP leaders have admitted this.
We have said this, INDIA has said this, and civil society organisations have been saying this for a long time.
Even the Supreme Court has observed that there is complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur," Meghachandra said.
He continued that the Government is unable to protect lives and properties of the people, guaranteed by the Constitution.
Even after nearly 6 months, the Government has not taken up a single initiative that would restore peace in Manipur.
The Government and the Cabinet Ministers, while caring for only their chairs, have been lying daily to the people to pass time, he alleged.
While the Government has failed in protecting the lives of civilians and their properties, it has yet again failed to protect the life of security forces, Meghachandra said.
Manipur's situation has degraded to a level where security forces are not even feeling safe, he said, asking how long the Government will remain a spectator before reacting.
Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union, Village Volunteers Force Moirang and many others have also condoled Chingtham Anandkumar.
They condemned the killing of the cop in the strongest terms.
