Kuki sniper kills SDPO at Moreh, reinforcement team ambushed, 3 hurt

In a daring attack, one Sub- Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Manipur Police posted at Moreh was shot dead by Kuki terrorists this morning.
Further, additional commando personnel sent from Imphal were ambushed by Kuki terrorists on the way and three of them sustained injuries.
A team of Moreh Police and commando personnel were inspecting construction of a helipad at Eastern Shine School ground, Moreh when Kuki terrorists shot the SDPO with a sniper rifle at around 9.30 am.
The bullet hit SDPO Chingtham Anand Kumar on the abdomen and exited through the back.

It was suspected that the bullet which claimed the life of SDPO Anand Kumar was fired from the direction of Chavangphai and Canan Veng.
Soon after, heavy exchange of fire broke out between security personnel and Kuki terrorists while Anand Kumar was evacuated to Primary Health Centre, Moreh but he succumbed to the injury at around 10 am.
Additional security personnel and commandos led by Themthing Ngasangva, IGP Zone 1 rushed to the border town soon after the incident to carry out massive search operations and nab the Kuki terrorists.
But the additional commando team led by the IGP Zone 1 too came under attack from heavily armed Kuki terrorists at a place between Boljang and Sinam Khul during which three commando personnel sustained bullet injuries.
They were evacuated to Raj Medicity and their conditions are said to be stable.
The injured security escort of the IGP Zone-I have been identified as Head Constable S Thuikhaveng s/o Samuel of Kachai village, Constable S Sekharjit s/o Priyananda of Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai and Constable L Bangkim s/o Tomba of Yairipok Khoirom.
One of the police personnel who was a part of the additional team said that the convoy came under attack from two sides of the hill range in between Bongyang and Sinam village.
The firing started when some vehicles of the additional team were about to reach Sinam village.
The vehicles of IGP Zone-I Themthing Ngasang-va formed the rear portion of the convoy.
Soon after the attack, a heavy gun fight broke out in the area.
A massive search operation was underway till the time of filing this report.
Earlier, the dead body of SDPO Anand Kumar was airlifted from Moreh and brought back to Tulihal International Airport from where it was taken to JNIMS Hospital for post mortem.
A large number of people including the family members of the fallen police officer gathered at JNIMS morgue during the post mortem but they refused to take the body.
Family members and people of the police officer's locality asked high ranking officers of Manipur Police to arrange a meeting with the Chief Minister as they wanted to place some demands to the Government.
They also asked the police top brass not to take the body of Anand Kumar from JNIMS morgue for any State honour until their demands are fulfilled.
As such, the ceremony of offering State honour and paying last respects to the martyred police officer which was supposed to be held in 1st MR complex was deferred.
Deceased Chingtham Anand Kumar was recently promoted to the rank of MPS officer.
A student of Sainik School, Pangei, he was earlier posted at Imphal West Commando, Thoubal and Moreh.
He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter.
Meanwhile, volunteers of Youth of Manipur took out a protest rally along Tiddim road this evening against the killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand Kumar.
They marched up to the gate of the Chief Minister's bungalow and staged a protest demonstration there before they went back peacefully.
