Imphal, August 20 2026:
Endorsing public demand for updating NRC, the Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council has announced boycott of all census related operations.
Speaking to reporters at the party's office at Irawat Bhawan, spokesperson RK Amusana said the BJP-led State Government is inviting fresh trouble by carrying out census related operations against the public aspirations.
The people's demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to census exercise is legitimate, he said.
Amusana quoted ex-Chief Minister N Biren Singh's recent claim that there are more than 900 new and unrecognised villages in Manipur, and said that the public call for updating the NRC amid such circumstances is justified.
The NRC, he said, must be updated prior to census exercises to detect and identify foreigners.
Conducting census operations before NRC risks identification and inclusion of foreigners as citizens, he added.
Amusana further said that the CPI-MSC strongly condemns excessive use of force by the police and other security forces against peaceful protesters.
The Chief Minister should rein in the police force and issue strict instructions against use of force against protesters, especially against students and women, he added.
