Imphal/Thoubal/Kakching, August 20 2026:
Under the banner of the Campaign for Just and fair Delimitation (JFD), large numbers of people, including womenfolk, took out rallies in several districts today.
In Thoubal, demanding NRC prior to census operations, members and volunteers of the JFD Women Wing Thoubal District attempted to storm the office of the district's Deputy Commissioner this afternoon.
A large number of women marched towards the Thoubal DC office at around 1.35 pm.
While attempting to lock the gate of the DC complex, a confrontation broke out between the women protesters and police personnel on duty.

Thoubal Police Officer-in-Charge later arrived at the scene and allowed some representatives of the protesters to meet Deputy Commissioner Yumnam Robita.
After meeting the DC for about 45 minutes, the protest demonstration concluded peacefully.
Briefing the media after the meeting, JFD Women Wing Thoubal member Irom Subashini said the Deputy Commissioner has agreed to the demands of the protesters to close all offices, except some essentials, under the district administration.
Subashini said the JFD Women Wing appreciates the DC for expressing her support toward the cause, lending cooperation.
In Kakching, protesters denounced all census related operations and marched toward the DC office complex.
The protesters were however stopped by the police and other security forces at the LOIS office near the DC office in Chumnang.
A 10-member team of the protesters were then allowed to meet the Deputy Commissioner.
During the meeting, the representatives strongly urged the DC to halt all census related operations including training for supervisors and enumerators in the district.
A public meeting held later at Naohal Lai market shed took a resolution to intensify the stir if census related operations continue.
JFD representatives took part in the rally and the meeting.
Sit-in protest demonstrations demanding NRC before census were held across Imphal today.
At Kwakeithel, a sit-in was organised by the Meira Paibi Apunba Lup Kwakeithel Moirangpurel Leikai.
Meanwhile, Nongchup Imphal Palem Ima Apunba Lup (NIMPAL) secretary Soraisham Shanti Leima has condemned alleged attempts by the police to arrest JFD members and leaders.
At a press meet at the Lup's office at Uripok, Shanti said arrest of any of the members of the JFD will invite public wrath and unprecedented stir.
The State Government must hear the demand of its public and take up steps to update the NRC before carrying out census operations, she said.
Attempts to arrest or arrest any JFD members will be seen as an attempt to undermine the public movement, she added.
