Man remanded to police custody for Facebook post

Imphal, April 06 2024:
Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded a 37-year-old man to 3-days police custody for posting a series of comments on Facebook "which insulted and intimidated women as a whole with an intent to outrage their modesty and provoke the general public" .
The man, identified as Sarungbam Johny, was arrested last night by Imphal West police after registering a suo-motu case.
Sarungbam Johny is son of S Chaoba Singh of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai.
He was produced before the Court by a team of Imphal police station.
Johny had allegedly posted several comments that read "Kuki Nupi na AR camp ta changbaduga eikhoi gi hanubi singna Babupara da lakpaga kari bu khetnarigeyne Sudhir Sahib, Hanubi Khara yonthokchari Manipur da Thambam leitrey only Rs 500...Babupara da Hanjin Hanjin lakeba Hanubi sing sea yum gi mi singna ahmukta warakpiyu Yam Ekai" .
In the Court of the CJM, the APP submitted that the viral Facebook post "directly insults and intimidates the old aged womenfolk" and were made with the intent to outrage their reputation and modesty.
The APP said that the accused admitted to have committed the offence and disclosed that he intentionally and deliberately posted a series of provocative messages and videos on facebook which directly insulted and intimidated the women.
Investigation further revealed that the accused is a well known YouTuber/blogger and digital creator having more than 30 thousand followers on his Facebook page.
The accused also has a YouTube channel having more than 1 lakh 80 thousand subscribers.
The accused person is a very influential person and the post he shared on Facebook and YouTube can influence or induce the general public within a short period, said the APP praying for 7-days police custody.
The Court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of APP and IO of the case, remanded Johny to 3-days police custody till April 8 .
