Imphal, April 06 2024:
Additional District and Sessions Judge Fast Track Court Manipur East has granted interim pre arrest bail to Moirangthem Totomsana, Independent candidate for Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency till April 15 .
He was granted the interim bail in connection with a FIR lodged against him at Imphal police station for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister N Biren during a live TV debate on the upcoming Lok Shaba elections.
Independent candidate Moirangthem Totomsana alias Nongshaba, 50, hails from Heirok Part-II Mayai Leikai.
Filing an anticipatory bail application before the Court, Moirangthem Totomsana's counsel submitted that the candidate is a member with high position in the State unit of the Rastriya Janahit Sangharsh Party (RJSP), which is a registered political party of India.
The counsel argued that during the live TV debate on April 2, the candidate did not make any derogatory statement against the Chief Minister by violating the provision of model code of conduct.
The counsel further submitted that the candidate couldn't appear before the police station when summoned yesterday due to some unavoidable circumstances.
Stating that the candidate is now apprehensive of arrest on false charges, the counsel prayed for anticipatory bail and an interim order to release him on bail in the event of his arrest.
The Court, on perusal of the records, granted the candidate interim bail.
The Court further directed OC Imphal police station to furnish bail objection report along with the case on or before April 15 and fixed the day for report and hearing.
