Imphal, April 06 2024:
All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) has appealed to election officials, political parties, civil society groups and all the voters to join hands in ensuring that the upcoming elections are not marred by violence, coercion or any form of electoral malpractice.
According to a statement AMCO, Manipur is preparing for the 18th Lok Sabha elections on April 19 and 26 at a critical juncture and accordingly needs an ethical and peaceful electoral process.
In the context of ongoing ethnic tensions and widespread concerns about violence, the upcoming election must uphold the highest standards of fairness and integrity by discarding vote-buying and other malpractices.
The AMCO statement further said that the legitimacy of any government, especially in a diverse and multi-ethnic state like Manipur, is contingent upon a fair representation of its people's will, achieved through free and fair elections.
This election is not only a political exercise but also a moral test of people's ability to create a just and peaceful society, as mandated by Christian teachings, it said.
The Christian community, as an integral part of Manipur's diverse tapestry, prays and advocates for an election that transcends the current climate of fear and hostility.
In the spirit of Galatians 5:14 - 'For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbour as yourself, AMCO said and called for an election characterized by mutual respect, understanding and a commitment to the common good.
