Imphal, April 06 2024:
Apart from the on-going anti-rabies vaccination drive, the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry has begun administering free vaccination for other diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS), Black Quarter (BQ) and Classical Swine Fever, Department director RK Khogendrajit has informed.
Addressing a press meet held at the Directorate's office, here, on Saturday afternoon, director Dr RK Khogendrajit said that in view of the rising number of dog bite cases in the state, the Department has taken up some strict measures.
As part of the measures, the department in collaboration with local clubs and CSOs has been organising anti-rabies vaccination camps since March 1 .
So far, a total of 336 camps have been organised in all districts of the state and altogether, 34,042 dogs and 1863 cats vaccinated for free from March 1 till 31 .
Additionally, the department has begun vaccination for livestock against FMD, HS, BQ and Classical Swine Fever from April onwards, he said, while calling for continued support from local clubs and CSOs.
Stating that FMD is one of the most common diseases affecting cattle, he explained that the disease causes massive economic losses to the farmers.
As such, the central government had taken up a flagship programme to control the disease by 2025 and completely eradicate the same from the country by 2030 .
Dr Khogendrajit continued that farmers engaged in husbandry often faced immense difficulties when their livestock are affected by epidemics or natural calamities.
Thus, to help alleviate their suffering, the department under strict instructions of Veterinary minister in-charge Khashim Vashum and secretary Michael Achom, signed an agreement with the National Insurance Company in Thangal Bazar on March 11.Farmers rearing cattle, buffalo, sandang (mithun), yak, goat, sheep and camel can take out insurances (Rs 1 lakh) on the same, with the central government subsiding the scheme and the farmers shelling out Rs 1050 only instead of Rs 5,250 .
The director then informed that the veterinary hospital in Sanjenthong has resumed its night shift from April 1 .
The hospital management system has also begun its work, he said, adding that the hospital management system has so far been implemented only in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Uttarakhand apart from Manipur.
