Training on human trafficking, child protection held

With an aim to enhance police response to human trafficking cases involving child victims, a day-long training on human trafficking and child protection was held in Bishnupur district on Thursday.
The training was organised by FXB India Suraksha in association with Senapati District Police with an objective to strengthen police response mechanism to effectively handle cases of human trafficking and child victims, said a statement of FXB India Suraksha.
It was conducted as part of project Mukti, an Anti-trafficking initiative to combat human trafficking and child sexual abuse in Manipur, which is being implemented with the support of ECPAT Luxembourg.
As many as 26 police officers representing Police stations, Women Police Stations, Anti-human trafficking Units and Special Juvenile Police Station including Mao SDPO Timothy participated in the programme which covered discussions on the existing laws related to child protection and human trafficking, it said.
Programme officers, of FXB India Suraksha Sunil Meitei Khoinaijam and Wungreiso A Shangh, attended the event as resource persons and took turn to explain the different legislations related to human trafficking, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 and Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) of Children Act (Amended) 2021 which were supported by case studies, audio-visual learning materials, etc.
In his presentation, Shangh touched upon the legislations related to child protection and shared the procedures mandated for police and other relevant stakeholders under the laws.
He also discussed about the various challenges and barriers faced in handling cases of children in respect of Manipur state and the possible solutions to ensure the safety and security of children and women.
Highlighting various concepts related to human trafficking, Sunil enlightened the participants on different sections especially section 370 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that defines human trafficking.
He also suggested steps that could be taken to combat organised crime.
At the same time, he also took note of the various challenges associated in identification, screening and accessing services by victims of trafficking.
The programme was well received by the participants and raised various queries to enhance their understanding on the issues.
FXB India Suraksha has been implementing Project Mukti since 2015 and at present is implementing Phase II of the project.
Till date, a series of training programmes has been conducted under the project for law enforcement officials including Paramilitary officials in Manipur and so far, trained over 1500 officials covering 13 districts out of the
16 districts of Manipur.
