Imphal, November 03 2022:
Students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School on Thursday erupted in protest over the transfer of one of the school's chemistry teachers.
Around 12.30 pm Thursday, the students stormed out of the school campus and carried out a rally, while shouting slogans against the transfer order.
However, they were intercepted by police near Old Lambulane.
Later, around 8 students were picked out as representatives and taken for a talk with the joint secretary of Education (S) .
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, a student conveyed that the school currently has only 6 teachers for chemistry subject, of which one is about to retire.
Amidst this, another teacher has been transferred which is unacceptable, he said, adding that the timing of the transfer is not feasible as the examinations are approaching.
Meanwhile, the joint secretary informed that since the rationalisation process has commenced in the state, the best action would be to support the process.
The transfer of any teacher is done after taking the whole school into consideration and not on self-interest.
Teachers should extend their support in this regard.
Students must also not act under the influence of others.
The department is taking up various works for the welfare of the students, the secretary said and urged for cooperation.
Students of Mekola Gulap Higher Secondary School also launched protest against transfer of their principal and assigning of a new principal who is due to retire-after three months.
As per an order issued by Education (S) joint secretary on October 31, principal K Tiken was transferred as Education (S) OSD and replaced by a teacher from Vungzagen Higher Secondary School namely L Phulchand as the new principal of the school.
When Phulchand arrived at the school, the students protested stating that they do not want a new principal, who is due to retire after three months.
Speaking in this regard, a student protestor recalled that principal Tiken had taken up several initiatives for the welfare of the school and even used his own sources to address inadequacies of the school.
Moreover, it is unfortunate that a teacher retiring within a few months' time has been given the charge as the new principal of the school, the student lamented, while claiming that such transfer of the principal shows that the education department as well as the education minister do not consider welfare of the students.
