Imphal, November 03 2022:
Students of Mekola Gulap Higher Secondary School have launched an indefinite shutdown of the school in protest against the Government's appointment of a new principal who is just three months shy
of retirement.
Reportedly, as per an order issued by the Joint Secretary of Education (S), K Tiken, the previous principal of the school was appointed as OSD of Education (S) and L Phulchand from Vungzagen Higher Secondary School was transferred to Mekola Gulap Higher Secondary School as the new principal.
L Phulchand was barred from entering the premises of the school this morning by the students who professed that they did not want a new principal.
The students also stopped teachers from entering the school and locked down all classrooms including the principal's office.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Laishram Roji, a student of Mekola Gulap Higher Secondary School, sang praises of the previous principal, K Tiken, and held him responsible for the development of the school.
The student claimed that on many occasions, K Tiken had spent money from his own pocket to meet the needs of the school as well as the students.
She accused the Education Department and the Education Minister of working against the best interest of the students by transferring such an exemplary principal and bringing in a new one who is just a few months away from retirement.
Condemning the act, she appealed to the State Government to revoke the transfer order, cautioning that more intense forms of agitations will be launched otherwise.
Further, the student appealed to the relevant authority to take up necessary action in view of approaching exams.
The students shouted many slogans voicing their dissent during the day's protest.
