Imphal, November 03 2022:
The Manipur Loumee Marup has appealed to the Government to declare drought in Manipur and compensate farmers.
As drought has hit paddy crops, a compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare should be paid to farmers, it said in a statement.
It said a team of peasant leaders led by Dr Vijoo Krishnan, joint secretary of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) visited some regions in Imphal East district and interacted with farmers of Top Yaral Loukol.
The village has a population of about 2,000 people and 400 houses and about 260 hectares of paddy fields.
Even though it is located in close proximity to the Iril River, the Government has however not set up any irrigation facilities.
Due to lack of rains and drought, farmers have suffered total loss, it said.
A memorandum in this regard will be submitted to the authorities concerned within a few days in the interest of the farming community, it said.
Leaders of Samyukta Kisan Morcha, Farmer's Joint Action Committee, Loumee Shinmi Apunba Lup (Lousal) and Manipur Loumee Marup took part in the inspection.
