State Handloom Exhibition begins

Imphal, September 18 2022:
Under the aegis of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans' CS Ltd inaugurated a two-week 'State handloom expo' under the National Handloom Development Programme at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi on Sunday.
Speaking at chief guest of the inaugural function, National Awardee (Handloom) K Medha opined that there is no need to feel sorry for being a weaver, as this is a source of livelihood for most women.
She then urged all weavers in the state to produce good quality products.
Medha continued that the indigenous products of the state are in high demand outside Manipur, but the current quantum of supply could not meet the demand.
There is the need to change this status quo, she said, adding that expos serve as a platform for the talent ed artisans of the state to showcase and market their products and as such, we must work hard to meet the demands of the customers.
Presided over by AWAS president A Ronika, the inaugural function was also attended by Weavers Service Centre assistant director (Weaving) M Ibohal; Imphal East District Handlooms and Textiles project manager Th Ibemcha and National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd marketing officer-in-charge Y Shantikumar as guests of honour.
In all, 60 stalls are showcasing various handloom products in the Expo.
