Imphal, September 18 2022:
Justice M V Muralidaran has categorically asserted that independence and fearlessness are the two important pillars of strength on which the existence of an effective bar depends.
This was stated in his speech as chief guest during the 71st foundation day of the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) held at Chirap Court complex on September 15 .
Speaking on the occasion, Justice MV Muralidaran stated that the Association was formed on September 15, 1951 with Sougaijam Somendro as the first president of Manipur Bar Association.
On April 10, 1993 the association was rechristened as All Manipur Bar Association and registered under Manipur Societies Registration Act 1986 in 2003 .
He further stated that members of the Association played pivotal roles in dispensation of justice and it is high time to acknowledge the values on which AMBA was founded.
He continued to say that if the Court is a temple of justice then lawyers are its pillars and without lawyers, the temple would tumble down.
He added that the role of lawyers is even recognized in Article 22 (1) of the constitution which stipulates that no person shall be denied the right to consult and be defended by a legal practitioner of his choice.
Highlighting the importance of independence and fearlessness, Justice MV Muralidaran opined that these two play a major role in preservation and upholding democracy.
"A strong bar and a strong judiciary are essential for the maintenance of the rule of law; the bench is a branch of the bar and together they constitute the justice system.
Neither the bench alone nor the bar itself can secure justice for the people and the need of the hour is a concerted effort in the larger interest of the people", he maintained.
As a part of the function, floral tributes were offered on the photos of the deceased members of the Association.
It may be noted that the 71st foundation day celebration of AMBA was attended by Justice N Bimol; Lenin Hijam, Advocate General, High Court of Manipur; N Ibotombi, President, High Court Bar Association Manipur; Thangjam Arunkumar, MLA Wangkhei AC; Maharaja Sanajoaba Leishemba, MP Rajya Sabha and Puyam Tomcha, President, AMBA.
