Imphal, September 18 2022:
Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) celebrated its 11th foundation day at Meipa Banquet Hall, Palace Compound, here on Sunday.
In his speech as chief guest of the event, Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykisan said that there is no bigger issue in Manipur than drugs.
The youth are unable to take up or assist in the development of the state due to influence of drugs.
However, the issue seems to be ignored most of the times, which makes it difficult to discern whose fault it is the government, the CSOs/student organisations or some group of people.
On the 'War on Drugs' mission of the government, the MLA requested a copy of the comments made by the participants of a debating competition held on Saturday regarding the flaws of the mission and assured to place forth the comments to the notice of the CM so as to rectify the flaws, if any, and make the mission more effective.
Joykisan continued that putting an end to the drug menace is everyone's concern and as such, there is a need to introspect why the police for the same are not working as effectively as we want them to be.
There is need to discern the credibility of the sources send out by the government to apprehend those dealing with drugs.
Any suggestions made in this regard will be forwarded to the CM, he conveyed.
The MLA then lauded the efforts made by BJYM and CADA for curbing the menace of drugs and alcohol, while urging all others to take the responsibility and help in putting an end to these social evils instead of being cynical or criticising others.
He also urged against stigmatising drug users but instead accepting them with love after they leave the rehabilitation centres.
Additionally, they should be checked to see if they could re-enter the society after getting out.
The centres could also give them opportunities to earn a livelihood before they leave so that they can join the mainstream society easily .
Such centres are very much in need, the MLA said and assured of extending support to SUK's efforts in curbing the drug menace.
Presided over by SUK president Dhanakumar Ningthouja, the function was also attended by CoHSEM chairman Dr Chingangbam Sarat and CCSK president Jitendra Ningomba as guests of honour.
As part of function, prizes were distributed to the winners of the debating competition held on Saturday.
