Ukhrul, July 06 2022:
At least three shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at Viewland Zone II on late Tuesday evening.
Two of the shops dealt in second-hand clothes, while the other one in sales and repair of bicycles, sources said.
Goods worth lakhs of rupees have been reportedly destroyed by the fire, though no human casualty has been reported.
Sources said that the fire broke out around 8 pm from one of the shops which were already closed.
It is suspected that electric short circuit could have caused the fire, though the actual cause could not be ascertained.
Soon after the fire, power supply was cut off in the entire township as a safety measure.
As the fire began to raze the shops which were located in a row, Ukhrul Fire Brigade along with a team of Ukhrul police and Assam Rifles rushed to the spot and contained the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.
A large number of town residents also gathered to assist in dousing the fire.
The Fire Brigade pressed into action a fire tender, while the Assam Rifles deployed fire-fighting equipment including 2 foams and 1 each of water mist and dry powder fire extinguisher.
The Assam Rifles personnel also used hook sticks to remove burning clothes out of the shops.
