Imphal, July 06 2022:
MAHUD minister Yumnam Khemchand has said that the government is planning to set up plastic waste treatment plants in all districts of the state to address the issue of plastic menace.
While launching compacter vehicle of Imphal Municipal Corporation for garbage collection here on Wednesday, Khemchand said that as the solid waste treatment plant at Lamdeng cannot handle the solid waste generated in IMC area, the department has asked IMC to set up a similar treatment plant at a suitable location.
The department is also on the lookout for sites to facilitate dumping of waste in all the districts.
Bishnupur district already has a treatment plant while similar plants are under construction for Thoubal and Kakching districts, he informed while adding that DCs of other districts have also been instructed to identify waste dumping sites.
The compacter vehicle for IMC was acquired under the 14th Finance Commission Fund.
IMC already has two such vehicles acquired under Smart City Mission and they are being utilised in garbage collection, the minister said and appealed to all the families in municipal areas to use separate bins for plastic and other biodegradable wastes as IMC is planning to collect these wastes materials separately.
In his address, IMC caretaker mayor L Lokeshwar said that one compactor has capacity of seven to eight dumper trucks and these vehicles make garbage collection easy.
IMC will also take up proper planning to generate revenue from solid waste treatment plants, he added.
