Imphal, October 08 2022:
In connection with the observance of first World Geo-Diversity Day, a one-day seminar on the theme 'Geo-heritage conservation and Loktak Lake' was organised jointly by Federation of College Teachers' Association (FEGOCTA) and NG College at the college's premises, Lamphelpat, here, on Saturday.
Union MoS of External Affairs and Education Dr RK Ranjan, who attended the seminar virtually as chief guest, stressed the need for protecting places which have been declared as geo-heritage sites, one of which is the Loktak Lake.
Expressing confidence that the seminar will help the participants get acquainted with new information, he also pointed out that there are many other places in Manipur which could be declared as geo-heritage sites.
Observing that improvement is being made with regard to environmental education and its concept under UNESCO in the last decade; Dr Ranjan, however, remarked that while taking up steps to preserve geological heritage, environmental education seems to lack depth in matters of geo-ethic, geo-diversity and geo-heritage issues.
To solve this, geo-education should be promoted, he said, adding that it would be served as the primary tool and also aid in launching geo-tourism services.
Ranjan then expressed belief that geo-science education can assist in addressing the challenges associated with utilisation of natural resources, thereby providing sustainable resolutions to the people.
Presided over by FEGOCTA vice president and Seminar Organising Committee chairperson K Sanaton Sharma, the seminar was attended by MU School of Human and Environmental Science dean Prof Soibam Ibotombi; NG College principal Ashok RC and Thambal Marik College principal Prof Kh Mohon as guests of honour.
In all, 11 resource persons read their papers during the seminar which was attended by teachers from various colleges.
