IMPHAL: Soon after Irabot launched armed revolution, democratic movement for Manipur's sovereignty too begun and a huge public meeting was held at Mapal Kangjeibung on April 19, 1953 .
The decision taken at the meet openly rejected India's occupation of Kangleipak/Manipur.
The public meet was also the first step towards a democratic sovereignty movement to challenge neo-colonial process of the Mayang people's administration and this meet cannot be left out from the pages of revolutionary history of Kangleipak/Manipur as many leaders who spearheaded the movement were arrested and sent to jail.
The movement initiated by Yangmaso Shaiza, Sagolsem Indramani, RK Maipaksana and other leaders during the time instilled the spirit of patriotism and revolution among younger generation and accordingly formed 'Revolutionary Nationalist Party of Manipur' to have a united and independent Kangleipak/Manipur.
In the following years, the spirit of revolution spread across Kangleipak/Manipur and accordingly established many armed revolutionary groups and student organisations.
The organisations formed then started voicing openly against India's occupation of Kangleipak/Manipur, SOREPA said.
According to SOREPA, a new strategy for Kanglei-pak/Manipur's sovereignty movement started when several public meets and conventions held after the 1990s openly demanded the UN approved Right to Self Determination and considered this as legitimate rights of the people of Kangleipak/Manipur.
A three-day long public convention held in 1993 and participated by experts, academicians, student leaders and human rights defenders resolved that Kangleipak/Manipur was forcibly occupied by India in complete violation of UN Human Rights Charter, Covenants and Protocols after the then king Bodhchandra was forced to sign on the merger agreement on September 21, 1949 in Shillong.
The public convention also thoroughly discussed that India's occupation of Kangleipak/ Manipur on October 15, 1949 was against international law, dishonour of independence of smaller nations by India as well as the Right to Self Determination of neighbouring countries.
Based on resolutions arrived at the public convention, revolutionary groups started filling applications at the UN level and it was a step towards presentation of Kangleipak/Manipur's people's sovereignty movement to the global people.
This also indicated that sovereignty movement of Kangleipak/Manipur is being launched by the people collectively.
