New born, mothers feted; awareness prog conducted

Felicitation of newly born female child and their mothers cum awareness programme on Pre-Conceptual & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act (PC & PNDT) 1994 was organised by Ukhrul district administration in collaboration with DPO, ICDS, Social Welfare and CMO, District Health Society, Ukhrul at DRDA Hall under the aegis of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao on Thursday.
Speaking at the programme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) district nodal officer A Rohini Kumar explained that BBBP was initially introduced on January 22, 2015 all over the country with an aim to bring balance in the sex ratio in India.
The programme was initiated by three ministries of Women and Child, Family Welfare and Education.
He informed that the programme was specially meant to empower female child, reduce discrimination in the society and bring equitable society where both the gender has equal chances to progress in life.
The programme is in its 7th year now and has added more features in its implementation.
The recent addition to this programme was PG & PNDT Act 1994 under which there is restriction on gender determination before child birth, he added.
Ukhrul deputy commissioner Krishna Kumar, who was the chief guest, said that the initiative is to encourage and motivate to all those mothers who have girl child as it is one of the greatest gifts of God.
He expressed hope that every girl child would be provided with all the possible facilities to have a prosperous life in future and maintained that they should be equally treated as the male child in the family.
Citing reports of female foeticide and gender discrimination in some sections of the society in the country, he said with the introduction of this programme such instances have now reduced drastically.
As of today, Ukhrul does not have any such incidents but as a patriarchal society women have some complexes especially in domestic affairs which in a way give negative impact on their life.
Recent achievements made by the two women from Ukhrul, namely Solimla Jajo and Solan Jajo, who won 2nd and 4th position respectively in Miss Asia Physique contest held in Maldives, was praise worthy.
He assured that the administration will be taking up more activities for girls in the district and appealed to general public to join hand in taking up the programmes successfully.
Resource person of the event, doctor Pamza Shaiza made it clear that under the PC & PNDT Act 1994, any type of sex selection is strictly prohibited and it is punishable.
During the event, 24 female child and their mothers were given kits and sanitary pads to 10 adolescent girls.
ADM Chunglenmang, SDO Ukhrul Suranjoy Maibam Singh, SDO Jessami Mangminlen Vaiphei, CMO Doctor AS Kapangring, DPO W Shimreipam and many other officers from various departments were present during the programme.
