Imphal, October 13 2022:
Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), the lone medical institute operated by the Manipur government, is steadily catching up to stand at the same level as other medical institutes in the country.
One of its recent achievement included performing 10 kidney transplants successfully within a span of few months.
According to JNIMS authority, with the BJP government holding power both at the centre and in the state, and with CM N Biren presiding over JNIMS Society, the Institute is continuing to make progress in various aspects.
Most recently, the Institute performed 10 successful kidney transplants, with the patients' families donating the kidneys themselves.
As the patients were unable to afford the treatment, the operations were covered under the PMJAY and CMHT schemes.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government installed an Oxygen Plant LMO (10 KL) at JNIMS and one LMO (20KL) at the adjacent Veterinary complex with the latter also handed over to JNIMS, thereby enabling the medical institute to meet the oxygen demands of not only its own but also for the entire state as well.
On top of this, more ventilators, monitors, suction pumps and beds have been added to assist Covid patients.
Meanwhile, with the aim of maintaining a clean and hygienic campus, a waiting shed has been constructed for patient parties and approval received for construction of a parking space for two wheelers.
Approval has also been given for setting up child care centre in JNIMS, along with increasing the MBBS seat to 150 and a 50 bedded psychiatric ward.
For cancer patients, Karkinos Healthcare has taken up a project for a cancer treatment in JNIMS, while work has commenced for two new hostels for MBBS students and private wards for patients.
To facilitate poor patients, the institute is being revamped and a neurosurgery and an endocrine department opened.
For heart patients, CAT Lab will soon be operationalized, which will assist patients with regard to heart and neurological interventions.
As part of the government's efforts to address shortages of dental doctors in the state, approval has been received to open a dental college at the Institute with intake capacity of 50 seats.
This will facilitate students who want to study dentistry in the state.
In addition, a playground has also been constructed to help the students maintain good physical health.
The JNIMS authority further conveyed that under the strict supervision of CM N Biren, efforts are on to bring JNIMS at the same level as that of the medical institutes in other states.
Apart from providing free treatment to patients through PMJAY and CHMT schemes, generic medicines are also being provided at affordable prices under the Prime Minister Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
Such steps have relieved a huge burden from the people of the Manipur.
There will be no instances of families having to sell or pawn off their wealth for medical expenses in the next few years, the JNIMS authority conveyed.
