Drug smuggler netted, poppy plants destroyed

Troops of Keithelmanbi Battalion Assam Rifles of IGAR (South) in a joint operation with Manipur Police apprehended a drug smuggler from near Thoubal Mela Ground along National Highway-102 in Thoubal district on Monday.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that the joint team an operation and apprehended the smuggler along with 34 soap cases of brown sugar approximately worth Rs 1.5 crore from a Maruti Ecco Van.
The apprehended drug smuggler and recovered items have been handed over to Thoubal Police Station for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Jwalamukhi Battalion Assam Rifles of 22 Sector/IGAR (East) on Tuesday carried out a joint operation along with a team of Kangpokpi Police and NAB destroyed illegal poppy cultivation spread over an area of 25 acres at Nepali Aisan and Denglen villages in Kangpokpi district.
According to reports, the combined team destroyed illegal poppy cultivation worth approximately Rs 2.5 crore and also apprehended three individuals involved in poppy cultivation.
The individuals, who have been handed over to police and an FIR Registered against them have been identified as Sonmithang Touthang (27) s/o Jamthang Touthang of Denglen village, and Thanghaolal Touthang (21) and T Touthang (16) s/o Paongam Touthang, both hailing from Molkon Bazar.
Five poppy pods (fruits) were also seized from the cultivation site of Denglen village.
The combined team also comprising Kangpokpi Forest Department and Lhunhgtin Sub-division SDO was led by Kangpokpi Addl SP (Ops) Abdul Kalam.
The arrested persons along with the seized poppy pods were handed over to Saikul Police OC for further necessary legal actions, the report said.
