Kakching, July 14 2022:
Naharolgee Thoudang senior correspondent and former president of Socio-Economic Development Organisation (SEDO), Hiyanglam Elangbam Bormani of Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai, who is also a farmer, has launched hunger strike demanding timely distribution of urea to farmers of the state.
Bormani is carrying out his protest at Hiyanglam Lai Pangalba Keithel under Hiyanglam assembly constituency from Thursday.
Interacting with the media, Bormani claimed that the issue over urea is due to interference by politicians.
He accused the government of politicising the matter and the department concerned of not paying enough attention to the issue.
He also questioned the availability of urea in the black market even though it is a government- controlled item.
He further decried the department of involving MLAs, who will always be politically biased, in the distribution of urea to farmers.
He also criticised the local MLA for the way urea is being distributed in Hiyanglam assembly constituency.
Bormani further denounced the policy of the district agriculture officer of Kakching district for its policy to distribute 150 bags of urea per day and the officer is also unable to distribute urea on daily basis.
Such policy is a mockery to the farmers and it will not help in achieving self-reliance in terms of food production in the state as envisaged by the chief minister.
Blaming the minister concerned, MLAs and top officials of the agriculture department for the present situation, he drew attention of the chief minister to look into the matter and take up necessary measures so as to address the hardships being faced by the farmers at the earliest.
