Imphal, July 14 2022:
The Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) has reached an agreement with the organiser of Miss Manipur to prohibit western or any other dresses which don't reflect the culture and tradition of the State in the grand finale of Miss Manipur 2022 which will likely take place in September this year.
Speaking to media persons in this regard, PPCM convenor Maibam Bisheshore said that the committee has been regulating the conduct of the beauty contest since the past.
Saying that clothes or costumes which don't represent the tradition or culture of Manipur will not be allowed in this year's edition of the beauty contest, Bisheshore said that every contestant must wear only the traditional clothes of the communities/ethic groups of Manipur.
He also said that the organising committee must educate every contestant about the history, culture and tradition of Manipur and if there is any dispute regarding the conduct of the mega beauty contest then it must be resolved at the earliest.
Saying that only experts in the field must be selected as jury members of the beauty pageant and the organiser must not think only of making money, he asked the organiser to take responsibility for all consequences if they don't abide by the direction while holding Miss Manipur contest.
Director of Miss Manipur Organisation, Halley Laithangbam said that they have been organising Miss Manipur contest since 2016 by taking suggestions from the State Level Miss Manipur Committee which has leaders of several women associations as members.
There was no Miss Manipur contest in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid pandemic.
He assured that the contestants will only wear traditional clothes in the beauty contest.
To a query, Halley said that auditions to select contestants for the beauty pageant are yet to commence but the grand finale will likely be held on September 11 at Lamboikhongnangkhong.
