Thoubal, July 14 2022:
One Elangbam Bormani Meitei from Hiyanglam has launched a hunger strike in protest against the non availability of adequate urea for cultivation in Manipur.
Bormani Meitei is a former president of SEDO Hiyanglam and he began his hunger strike at Hiyanglam Keithel in Kakching district today.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of his protest demonstration, Bormani said that he will continue his strike until the State Government takes up appropriate measures to provide adequate urea to farmers in Manipur.
Claiming that there is shortage of fertilizers in the State as the Government indulges in urea politics, Bormani asked if the State Government and authorities concerned were not aware of the early arrival of monsoon this year and farmers spending night on streets and elsewhere outside their homes to get a bag of fertilizer.
He then asked why the Government didn't lift the fertilizer in advance to address the grievances of the farmers.
Asserting that many genuine farmers were left out while distributing urea, Bormani asked why the Government is handing over the share of fertilizers for farmers from different places to the local MLAs concerned instead of giving the responsibility to the Agriculture Department.
"We believe that Chief Minister N Biren Singh is a farsighted leader but why is he handing over the urea to the MLAs.
Our Chief Minister must know that there are not many MLAs who are as sincere as him," he said.
Claiming that the process in which urea is being distributed in Hiyanglam AC is inappropriate, he accused the MLA of Hiyanglam AC for giving fertilizers to only the farmers who support him.
He then urged the State Government to look into the matter so that every farmer could get their share of urea.
