Imphal, August 05 2022:
The Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC) has urged the State Government to reconsider its plan to lift the ban on the sale of alcohol in the State by taking into account the social, economic, health, and spiritual consequences of alcoholism.
In a statement, the MBC expressed concern about the plan of the Government to lift prohibition to generate revenue.
Saying that they recognise the importance of Government revenue generation, but it cannot come at the expense of its citizens' deteriorating socioeconomic conditions, the MBC continued that the State's severely underfunded health infrastructure will be put under severe strain while women, children, poor families, and vulnerable communities will suffer irreparably as a result of alcohol addictions and other alcohol-related illnesses if the ban is lifted.
