Imphal, April 24 2024:
Clarifying that no pressure was exerted on any individual regarding the Kyamgei incident during the first phase polling on April 19, Peace and Integrity Committee Kyamgei (PICK) condemned alleged attempt to tarnish reputation of the Committee which only tried to bring an amicable solution to the incident.
Addressing media persons at Kyamgei Macha Ibungo Laibung, on Wednesday, convenor Ch Meghachandra said PICK is an apex body of 9 organisations operating in Kyamgei area formed in the aftermath of the ethnic crisis on May 3 last year to collectively work for restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
It is very unfortunate that Medha, the younger sister of the Kyamgei incident victim namely Yumnam Shanta tried to project PICK in poor light before the public, Meghachandra said.
With regard to Medha claiming that the firing attack at the house of Shanta and subsequent assault were perpetrated by volunteers of Arambai Tenggol (AT) on the day of the election, the convenor informed that as the head office of AT Unit 29 is located at Kyamgei, PICK received a complaint requesting assistance in resolving the matter.
As an apex body, PICK intervened to help resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents from recurring and never took side with any individual or group, or exerted pressure on Medha regarding the matter, Meghachandra stated.
He further explained that Medha was requested to identify the individuals she claimed were volunteers of AT, in order to resolve the matter peacefully and asked to specify what actions she wanted the public to take if at all AT volunteers were involved.
AT also requested identification of the individuals involved so that appropriate action could be taken, maintained the convenor, while disclosing that Medha was also asked issue clarification and tender public apology if she could not identify the individuals she claimed to be AT volunteers.
Meghachandra informed that amid plans for convening a meeting on the said issue on Wednesday Medha held a press conference accusing PICK of exerting pressure on her contrary to the fact that PICK only intervened with good intention.
However, due to the allegations levelled with malicious intent, PICK arid local meira paibi will no longer get involved in the case, he said.
Chipping in, All Kyamgei Nupi Chaokhat Thourang Lup assistant finance secretary, Chirom Jamuna said that meira paibi of Kyamgei and PICK had only intervened to bring about an amicable solution and never pressurised Medha and her family members to clarify about anything as claimed.
