Imphal, April 24 2024:
Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) on Wednesday stated that it prepared to launch agitations demanding the state government to provide patta (land document) to the indigenous Meetei, bereft of the same, and send recommendation for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list of the Indian Constitution.
A release issued by MMTU secretary Mutum Churamani contended that incompetence and corruption in the state government's revenue and settlement department during conduct of the land survey, are the root causes for disputes and confusions over land records.
There are many indigenous people who do not possess land patta or land record of rights, but have documents including Aadhaar and Voter-ID, it stated.
During a drive, MMTU interacted with people who do not have a land patta or a patch of land to call their own, while there were many instances of government officials and wealthy businessmen colluding to illicitly take ownership of undocumented land.
Rather than framing an apt policy for the economically backward people, the government officials have forcefully evicted and trashed the houses of many poor families, it claimed.
The lack of necessary documents including land patta has adversely affected the education and careers of many students as submission of land documents is mandatory for applying for admission and exams.
Considering the queries and demands of the people, MMTU has been preparing to launch various agitations on issues pertaining to according ST status to the Meetei (Meitei) and for provision of land patta to indigenous people who do not have one.
It also appealed for the participation of the people who do not possess land patta, in their agitations.
