House reaffirms stand on Sanamahi religion

The Manipur Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously resolved to reaffirm the Resolution No 86 passed by the House on August 1, 2003 for urging the Government of India to record 'Sanamahi Religion' in the census report and allot a separate code number for the religion in the Census operation.
The House discussed the matter on the last day of second session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Friday after MLA Kh Ibomcha Singh moved a Private Member Resolution and unanimously resolved to reaffirm the Resolution No.86 passed by the same House on August 1, 2003.Participating in the discussion, chief minister N Biren said that the resolution moved by MLA Ibomcha was in the interest of the members of the House and assured to urge authorities concerned to record 'Sanamahi Religion' in the census report and allot a separate code number for the religion in the Census operation.
Biren also recalled that a Private Member Resolution on the same matter was moved by the then MLA O Joy Singh on July 31, 2002 and a committee was constituted with the then art and culture minister Dr M Nara as chairman.
Based on recommendation of the committee, the House passed the resolution on August 1, 2003 and decided to urge the Government of India for inclusion of Sanamahi religion in the census operation.
MLA K Meghachandra supported the resolution moved by MLA Ibomcha stating that it is the need of the hour in the interest of people following Sanamahi religion.
Putting a separate religion code in the census operation will improve the status and development of the people, he added.
