State showing positive trend in fish production

Imphal, December 19 2023: The Inland fish production in the North Eastern states has recorded commendable average annual growth rate of 5.38 per cent over the last nine years, spanning from 2014-15 to 2022-23, according to data released by PIB Delhi quoting information provided in a written reply in Lok Sabha by union fisheries minister Parshottam Rupala.

The region has witnessed a significant increase in total fish production, reaching a peak of 6.04 lakh tonnes during the fiscal 2022-23 .

A detailed analysis of the state-wise fish production in the NE states over the past nine years reveals a positive trajectory with Assam leading and Tripura trailing.

Manipur is in the third place in terms of production.

Manipur recorded 0.31 lakh tonnes in 2014-15, 0.32 lakh tonnes in 2015-16, 0.32 lakh tonnes in 2016-17,0.33 lakh tonnes in 2017-18, 0.32 lakh tonnes in 2018-19, 0.32 lakh tonnes in 2019-20, 0.33 lakh tonnes in 2020-21, 0.33 lakh tonnes in 2021-22, and 0.34 lakh tonnes in 2022-23.The state has demonstrated a consistent and gradual increase in fish production over the years.

The growth appears modest, but the upward trend signifies a positive trajectory in the state's inland fish production.

While Assam leads the region in terms of total fish production, Manipur's incremental growth reflects the overall positive outlook for the NE states in the fisheries sector.

The collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable fishing practices and enhancing aquaculture seem to be yielding encouraging results.

The data underscores the importance of fisheries in the region's economic landscape, contributing to both food security and livelihoods.

The growth trend in Manipur, as seen in the comparative analysis, suggests that the state is actively participating in and benefiting from the positive momentum in the inland fish production sector.
