Chawangkining comes under attack, 2 houses burnt

Imphal, September 16 2026: Chawangkining village, located along Imphal-Tamei road, about 14 Kms away from Kangpokpi district headquarters came under heavy attack from suspected Kuki militants.

Even though there was no casualty, the suspected Kuki militants burned down two houses.

Sources said that the suspected Kuki militants who came from the directions of Kholen, Sejang and Haipi villages launched their attack at Chawangkining village at around 10.30 pm of September 15, 2026 .

CRPF troops stationed at Chawangkining village retaliated resulting in a sustained exchange of fire which lasted till this morning.

The attack ceased only after the arrival of security reinforcement at around 5 am today.

Before retreating, the suspected Kuki militants burnt down two houses and vandalised a few others located some distance away from the village, said the sources.

The Liangmai Naga Chabonphom has strongly condemned the arson attack allegedly carried out by Kuki militants belonging to KNF-P, KNF-N and KRA on Chawangkining village on September 15-16, 2026 .

The Liangmai Naga Chabonphom has demanded the authorities to arrest all militants involved in the attack, including members of KNF-P, KNF-N and KRA, and bring them to justice.

It has also demanded adequate compensation from the Government to rebuild the two houses burnt down during the attack and support for the victim families.

The Liangmai Naga Chabonphom has further urged the Government to take stronger security measures to prevent such attacks on innocent civilians and to ensure lasting peace in the region.

It has also expressed appreciation and gratitude to the CRPF personnel stationed at Chawangkining for their courage, bravery and unwavering commitment in protecting the Chawangkining villagers during the attack.

Their timely and resolute response has undoubtedly saved many lives and provided much-needed security to the villagers, it said.

Meanwhile, the Zeliangrong Baudi has expressed profound anguish over the continuing violence, bloodshed and arson in the hills of Manipur, particularly in Zeliangrong-inhabited areas of Tamenglong, Noney, Jiribam, Senapati and Kangpokpi.

The Zeliangrong Baudi said that it unequivocally condemns the killing of every innocent civilian, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or identity.

The life of a Naga, Kuki, Meitei or any human being is equally precious.

No political objective or grievance can justify taking innocent life, said a statement issued by the Zeliangrong Baudi.

It said, "We reject selective condemnation and justification of violence on the basis of collective identity" .

It has appealed to all armed groups and actors to cease attacks on civilians and settlements.

The Zeliangrong Baudi has also urged the Government of India and the State Government to take immediate impartial measures to protect vulnerable civilians in remote and conflict-prone areas.

It further demanded prompt, impartial and credible investigation into every killing, arson and destruction, and prosecution of those responsible.

The reported entrustment of the Tollen killings to the NIA must be followed through with thorough investigation and accountability, it added.

The Chawangkining Village Authority has also urged the Government to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into the attack and identify those responsible for taking strong legal actions.

It also urged the Government to strengthen security measures in and around Chawangkining village, review alleged delay in security response and arrival of reinforcement.

It urged the Government to provide adequate relief, rehabilitation and financial assistance to the affected families .
