Ukhrul, November 05 2026:
A large number of people from Ukhrul and Kamjong districts on Thursday held mass rallies demanding an end to the Manipur political crisis, removal of Assam Rifles from the Naga areas and to end the alleged proxy war in Manipur.
Thousands of people participated in the rally organised by Tangkhul frontal organizations under the aegis of UNC .
The rally started from two different points-Dungrei junction Hungpung and Mission Ground Alungtang, Ukhrul and later converged at the district headquarters ground, Wino Bazar for a public meeting.
Slogans like "Assam Rifles, Go back", "Resolve Manipur Crisis" and "Abrogate SoO Agreement" echoed throughout the rally.
Speaking at the public held at Wino Bazar, TNL president Sword Vashum stated that the demands for withdrawal of Assam Rifles, abrogation of SoO agreement and resolving the protracted Manipur crisis are no longer the wish of any particular organisation but the collective will of the people as testified by the huge turnout seen today.
"We cannot live long under suppression or militarization, our collective voice for a lasting political solution must be heard far and wide", he said.
Social activist Ngachonmi Chamroy said that the unrelenting Manipur conflict, which began in May 2023 must be resolved politically.
According to him, various mechanisms have been introduced in the State for resolving the ongoing violent confrontation by imposing President Rule and again restoring people's Government, however the situation has only worsened, which clearly shows it is a political issue and has to be resolved through political negotiation.
TSL president Thingreiphy Lungharwoshi read out a memorandum at the public meeting.
The memorandum urged the Central Government to recognize the Manipur issue as a historical issue rooted in the illegal Kuki immigration and hill-valley disparity and sought a permanent political solution by directly addressing the existing structural imbalances.
The memorandum addressed to the Prime minister of India said that the root cause of perpetual turmoil and communal conflict seen in Manipur is the highly skewed structure of political power sharing in absolute favour of the valley.
It said that the alleged unconstitutional and undemocratic arrangements of people's representation in the State legislature for the last 54 years have resulted in complete marginalization and deprivation of the tribals, Naga in particular.
"Nothing short of total restructure of people's representations in line with the Constitutional mandate would be acceptable to us, the Nagas", Tangkhul CSOs said in their memorandum It also demanded an end to militarization of Naga areas and withdrawal of Assam Rifles from all Naga areas.
Other demands listed in the memorandum are;
Stop waging proxy war using Kuki militants against the people of Manipur in general and the Nagas in particular.
Identify all Kuki refugees and illegal immigrants and repatriate them to the countries of their origin in a time bound manner.
Ensure that no "Separate homeland/administrative arrangements/territorial council" is granted in favour of the Kukis affecting the integrity of the Naga ancestral territories.
Declare KNF (P) and KNA/KNO and their affiliated SoO groups as terrorist organizations.
Revoke Suspension of Operation Agreement and disarm and arrest all SoO cadres.
Relocate all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) away from Naga inhabited areas.
Remove Nemcha Kipgen from the post of Deputy Chief Minister.
Furthermore, the memo demanded the Government of Manipur to immediately cancel all the illegal chieftainship/Touzis and village/settlement pattas/per-mits issued in favour of Kuki immigrants.
It said that all unauthorized and illegal Kuki settlements/villages/machete/hamlet must be evicted in accordance with law and no fresh/separate chieftainship/touzis or village/ settlement pattas/permit shall be issued in favour of the Kuki immigrants.
The memorandum was jointly signed by Sword Vashum, president TNL; Kashung Tennyson, president Tangkhul Headman Association; Thingreiphy Lungharwo, president Tangkhul Shanao Long; Ramreichan Keishing president Tangkhul Katamnao Long and Ringphapam Kasar, president Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long.
The memorandum was submitted to the Prime Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul.
