Imphal, December 19 2023:
All Manipur Relief and Village Volunteer Organisation Committee president Haobam Shitaljit has appealed to the people to extend help to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently taking shelter in relief camps as well as village volunteers guarding fringe settlements.
According to Shitaljit, people started providing both monetary and material assistance at individual level to the displaced people in the formative stages of the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3 .
Later, All Manipur Relief, and Village Volunteer Organisation Committee was formed on June 6, 2023 and aided the displaced people at relief camps after which the government stepped in to help those taking shelter in relief camps across the state apart from help extended by the committee.
However, condition of displaced people at some relief camps are still deplorable and in dire need of help, he said adding that the committee will continue to assist the displaced people with the help of the public.
Displaced people staying in relief camps at present are getting help from government at least to some extent and other sources but village volunteers guarding villages in fringe areas are facing numerous challenges and inconveniences as there has been negligible attention paid to them in-spite of their unrelenting service to safeguard the villagers from adversary elements, Shitaljit told media persons at Manipur Press Club on Tuesday and appealed to the people to extend help to village volunteers as well.
He also said that the committee has so far extended monetary and material help to the tune of Rs 1.45 lakh.
