JFD continues with NRC demand

Imphal, September 19 2026: Continuing its movement demanding the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the census, volunteers of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) locked several key Government offices today.

The offices picketed today included the Directorate of Settlement and Land Resources at Lamphel, the SDC office at Hiyangthang, Town Planning Department and the Manipur Municipality Property Tax Board, among others.

Notably, the JFD had urged the State Government to mount pressure on the Centre to fulfil the demand for updation of the NRC by September 30 .

Supporting the demand, a protest was staged at Khonghampat Awang Leikai by blocking half the National Highway.

The protest was organised by North Imphal Meira and the Club Co-ordinating Committee (NIMACCC) .

Speaking to the media, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that the indigenous people of Manipur would face an uncertain future if the NRC is not updated with 1951 as the base year.

Saying that illegal immigrants pose a serious threat to the indigenous population, he added that the JFD would never compromise its demand to update the NRC under any circumstances.

He cautioned that a series of intensified protests would be launched if the Government fails to issue an order by the end of this month assuring that the NRC will be updated with 1951 as the base year.

Various organisations, local clubs and women's groups have also been staging a series of protests demanding the updation of the NRC, citing concerns over illegal immigration and demographic imbalance.

The demand to update the NRC predates the ongoing crisis in Manipur, as concerns over illegal immigration have been a longstanding issue in the State.
