The Deputy Commissioner/District Election Officer of lmphal East district Khumanthem Diana Devi has appealed to all the politicalparties, candidates, voters and citizens of the district for strict adherence to the regulations mandated by the Model Code of Conduct which came into force subsequent to the announcement of the poll schedule for the 18 th Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on February 16 .
In a release, the DEO advised all to not carry more than Rs 50,000 in cash or above which may be used to induce or bribe the voters.
Carrying of Contra banned Drugs and Illicit Liquor of any kind shall not be permitted and the District Administration and the Police Department have instituted and deployed various personnel/manpower such as Flying Squad Teams and Static Surveillance Teams as countermeasures to check such activities.
The DEO also informed that under Section 123(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, any direct or indirect interference or attempt to interfere on the part of the Candidate or of his agent or any other person with the consent of the Candidate or his election agent with the free exercise of any electoral right is deemed to be a corrupt practice.
To reinforce these regulations, provisions under Section 171B and 171C of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked, stipulating punitive measures against individuals involved in offering or accepting gratifications in cash or kind, as well as those engaging in undue influence or threats during the electoral process, the DEO cautioned.
Highlighting that the District Administration has instituted 'Seizure of Cash Committee' and Monitoring Teams at various locations, the DEO appealed to the public to report any kind of violation of any kind to the Sector Officers/Special Executive Magistrates, Flying Squad Teams, Surveillance Teams for effective control over such activities.
Further, the DEO informed that a dedicated District Control Room has been installed/set up at Imphal East DC office complex, Porompat, to monitor such things and any violation of Model Code of Conduct can be reported to the designated authorities via toll-free helpline number 1950, C-Vigil Citizen App and ECI website.
