Imphal, November 07 2022:
There is a need to station adequate number of women and male police personnel at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for smooth handling of legal procedures in cases of sexual and domestic violence for victims admitted at the hospital, said RIMS Director Professor L Ranjit today.
The RIMS Director made the statement during the inauguration of a police picket inside the hospital campus at Lamphel today.
Speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural event, Prof L Ranjit said the hospital should have a women police cell to assist the hospital in handling victims of crimes, domestic and sexual violences.
The hospital admits and treats many victims of domestic and sexual violence.
The presence of women personnel in the campus would enable the hospital admit and take better care of these victims.
It would enhance the transaction of the legal procedures in such cases, he said.
RIMS campus is spread across 300 acres the institution has 1,200 beds.
Stationing only 10 police personnel in the campus doesn't suit the need, he added.
He hinted that only 10 personnel can't look after the safety of the doctors, nurses, patients and patrol the vast campus for security measures.
Increasing the number of personnel would enhance their capacity and better ensure the safety of doctors, patients and staff.
Imphal West SP Ksh Shivkanta, who attended the event as guest of honour said it is not an easy task for the personnel stationed at the hospital and they have a huge responsibility to provide security and ensure the safety of the hospital staff, patients and properties.
He lauded the dedication of the doctors, nurses and staff who are caring patients day and night, and asked the personnel of the police picket to perform their duty with sincerity and ensure the safety of the staff.
They should control or thwart any untoward incidents in the medical college, he said.
The SP also assured that additional personnel will be stationed to better man the hospital.
A team of the police led by a Sub Divisional Police Officer would also patrol the campus at night, he said.
RIMS Medical Superintendent Professor N Sanjib presided over the event.
