Key role of bamboo in life of Manipur folks stressed

An international seminar on 'Bamboo plantation, hardening and bamboo as earthquake proof materials for construction' was held today at Classic Grande here.
Supported by Babina Healthcare & Hospitality Industries Pvt Ltd, PWD and Manipur State Bamboo Mission, the seminar was jointly organised by Manipur University, CSIR-NEIST Lamphelpat and AIMS.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Dr RK Ranjan and Additional Director (retired), Health Dr S Manikanta graced the inaugural session as chief guest and president respectively.
Prof Ksh Lal Bihari Singha of Manipur University, Bamboo Science and Innovation president Dr Jean-Luc Kouyoumji, Prof Aung Myint of Irrawady Bamboo Association, Mandalay, Lt Gen (retired) Dr Konsam Himalay, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Lamphelpat Joint Director Dr I Meghachandra and CSIR-NEIST, Imphal Senior Principal Scientist Dr H Birkumar too attended the inaugural session as guests of honour.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr RK Ranjan hailed the seminar as a positive step in the right direction.
A large number of bamboo products are used in the day-to day life of Manipuri people and some of them are also used in religious rituals, Dr Ranjan said.
In addition, tender bamboo shoots are consumed as a popular food item in different forms, he said.
Bamboos are found abundantly in the State of Manipur.
Moreover, the Government of Manipur has been promoting bamboo plantation through several policies and programmes, he said.
Dr Ranjan said that large scale bamboo plantation can certainly help in mitigating climate change.
The inaugural session also featured a performance by the Chakpa Andro Panam Ningthou Meihoubirol Cultural Group.
The seminar will conclude tomorrow.
