Imphal, January 16 2023:
Reacting to reports of cops catching cops with drugs at Kuraopokpi area in Kakching district, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has questioned who will bear moral responsibility for the incident.
Notably, Kakching police had arrested five commando personnel with contraband items including over 1 kg of heroin and WY tablets at Kuraopokpi today.
Hours after the cops were caught, several MPCC members led by its president MLA K Meghachandra met Shrey Vats, Superintendent of Police of Kakching district.
Speaking to the media after meeting the SP, K Meghachandra said, the MPCC has urged the Superintendent of Police to swiftly and thoroughly investigate the case.
K Meghachandra said, the case should be investigated properly and efficiently.
He said the MPCC supports the Government's War on Drugs campaign and appreciates Kakching police for arresting its own personnel in the case.
However, the incident [police smuggling drugs] has cast doubt on the police enforcing the law.
"How were the police personnel, who are important machinery enforcing the Government's War on Drugs 2.0, were using Government vehicles in smuggling drugs?" The incident has sent a wrong message to the people and it may encourage smugglers, he said.
"When drugs were said to be smuggled in from Myanmar earlier, poppy plantations in the State became rampant after the BJP-led Government came," he said.
The largest drug seizure in the State was from Thoubal district and a foreigner was also arrested in the case.
However, the foreigner has been released on bail, he said, hinting that the war on drugs needs more teeth.
If the prosecution in such cases is not strong enough, then the war on drugs has no meaning, he added.
Further on the incident today, he asked if the Home Minister or the DGP would bear the moral responsibility.
