Kakching, January 16 2023:
Raising doubts over the credibility of the "War on Drugs" campaign launched by CM Biren in the state even as personnel of law enforcement agencies have been apprehended with drugs in their possession, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president K Meghachandra has enquired as to who will be held responsible for the police personnel engaging in drug trade.
The MPCC chief, upon learning about Kakching district police commando arresting 5 commando personnel attached to Kakching district police along with huge narcotics substances, visited the office of Kakching SP along with PCC member Kshetrimayum Kennedy, Kakching Block Congress Committee president Nongmaithem Ashok and general secretary Leishangthem Brojen and congratulated the police team for the brave act.
Speaking to media persons on his way out of the SP's office, Meghachandra opined that though the government is trying to tackle the issue of drugs by launching "War on Drugs" campaign, they need to seriously ponder whether merely taking some police personnel and destroying poppy plantations in the hills and organising meetings with village chiefs will solve the drug problem in the state.
Earlier drugs were procured from outside.
However, since launch of "War on Drugs" campaign, the number of drug processing units in the state has increased manifold in addition to expansion in poppy cultivated areas in the state, the MPCC chief maintained, while adding that the reliability of the "War on Drugs" campaign is Questionable.
Recalling the biggest drug haul case in the north east in 2020-21 in which a 'foreigner' was nabbed with drugs worth over Rs 400 crore but was released on bail, K Meghachandra expressed doubt that the 5 police commandos arrested on Monday with drugs could also be released on bail and that is the reason why he paid a visit to the Kakching SP.
He also enquired whether the DGP and the chief minister will resign from their respective posts on moral ground.
