Imphal, January 16 2023:
One inmate of the Winners Home, a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre located at Wakha Nongmaiching Chingkhong, Imphal East died at the centre.
The deceased has been identified as one Ningombam Sanjoy (40) s/o Ibohal of Kongba Laishram Leikai.
He reportedly died this morning.
But the circumstances under which Sanjoy died could not be ascertained till the time of filing this report.
On learning about Sanjoy's death, family members and people of his neighbourhood went to the rehabilitation centre and they had a brief stand off with the centre's staff, sources informed.
One of the family members said that they took Sanjoy to the Winners Home at around 4 pm yesterday after he made a declaration that he was determined to give up alcohol.
However, the rehabilitation centre called Sanjoy's family over telephone at around 9 am today informing that he had fallen ill.
However, when some family members went to the centre, Sanjoy was found dead.
The family maintained that Sanjoy was quite healthy even though he was a drinker.
He was a drummer (Pung artiste).
Saying that wounds/bruises were found on Sanjoy's body, the family expressed strong suspicion regarding his death.
Meanwhile, a joint action committee was constituted after a public meeting was held today at Kongba Laishram Leikai.
The meeting resolved not to claim the body of Sanjoy but launch protest agitation until the facts and circumstances leading to his death are established.
It is said that postmortem examination of Sanjoy's body was conducted at JNIMS this afternoon.
