Artworks of 29 artists on display at annual exhibition

The 41st Annual State Exhibition of Art organised in connection with the golden jubilee celebration of Manipur State Kala Akademi (MSKA), Imphal has commenced from Monday at Manipur State Art Gallery, Palace Compound, here.
A total of 39 artworks of 29 different artists are being displayed at the exhibition, which will continue till October 22 .
Besides, two state level award winning artworks are part of the exhibits.
Inaugurating the exhibition, Art and Culture commissioner M Joy said that as MSKA had been facing inconveniences due to staff shortage, 10 posts have been recruited.
He also hailed the contribution of the Akademi in promoting art, encouraging artistes, honouring them and preserving valuable artworks for the last SO years.
Noting that the Akademi has become a leading institute, he said many of the artworks on display at the exhibition have the potential to attract viewer.
This speaks volumes of the capability of local artists, he said and urged all concerned to preserve such artworks for future.
Imphal Art College former principal Yumnam Nabachandra, who presided over the function, said that there are plenty of historical evidences of skilful sculptors in Manipur including the sculpture of Govindajee and many other Hindu gods during the latter half of 18th century.
Around 90 per cent of the young artists of the state work with acrylic painting while number of artists who work in oil medium is rare.
As such, he encouraged the artists to experiment with other medium of arts instead of just working in acrylic.
He also deliberated on topics related to graphic art and sculpture.
