Two sentenced to 2 yrs RI

Two men convicted for abducting a woman way back in 2001 have been sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment.
Akoijam Zilla (46) s/o Ak Ibotombi of Kiyam Siphai Amureijam Leikai and Sanasam Binoy alias Inee (46) s/o Bede of Sabaltongba Mayai Leikai were convicted by Session Judge, Thoubal Binny Ngangom on February 9 in the abduction case while Yumnam Chandra (45) s/o Yaima of Haokha Makha Leikai was acquitted.
Both the convicts were produced before the same Court today for sentence hearing.
During the sentence hearing, Special PP N Sushila Devi prayed for awarding maximum punishment to the convicts for attempting to abduct the victim.
On the other hand, defence counsel of Ak Zilla submitted that the convict was a first time offender and no FIR was registered against the convict for more than 20 years.
Saying that Ak Zilla is the only bread earner of the family and his wife is also ill, the defence counsel prayed for awarding minimum punishment.
S Binoy's defence counsel submitted that Binoy is a manual labourer and has been suffering for the last 20 years because of the case.
It is also submitted that Binoy's wife is ill and all their children are dependent on him.
The defence counsel then prayed for minimum punishment and fine.
The Court, after hearing the special PP, defence counsels and on perusal of the case record, sentenced the convicts to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 2 years and pay a fine of Rs 5000 each.
In default of payment of the fine, the convicts have to undergo another 6 months of simple imprisonment, the order said.
The Court also directed that the period which the convicts had undergone during the time of investigation of the case and the subsequent trial be set off from the prison sentence.
