Poppies destroyed, drug dealer jailed

Imphal, February 13 2023:
Around 4.9 acres of poppy plantations which was being illegally cultivated at the foothills of Khopibung village under Sagolmang police station was destroyed on Monday.
According to a police report, a combined team of Imphal East district police, Forest Department, NAB, 4 IRB and Executive Magistrate of Saikul destroyed the poppy plantations found growing at the foothills of Khopibung village on Monday.
Sagolmang PS has registered a case in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Special Court (ND & PS) Bishnupur on Monday sentenced one Khwairakpam Romio s/o (L) Budhi of Nambol Awang Leikai, who was arrested by a team of Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) with 1050 gm of heroin from Lainingthou Khoriphaba Chmg inter-village road under Nambol police station on October 1, 2004 to rigorous imprisonment for 15 years.
The court further ordered Romio to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh within 5 years, failing which he would have to stay in jail for 6 more months.
The time he stayed in the jail during the trial period will be commuted from his 15-year rigorous imprisonment sentence.
