Bishnupur, September 26 2022:
CADA Bishnupur District Committee and Ningthoukhong keithel Phambi Ima Lup jointly staged a sit-in protest at Ningthoukhong Bazar on Monday, denouncing the decision of legalising liquor in the state.
Speaking on the sidelines, Ima Lup secretary RK Shushila Devi remarked that the government's decision to legalise production and sale of liquor will not only destroy the young generation but also cause many women to become widows, especially considering the fact that the government could not even stop occurrence of crimes when prohibition was in place.
As such, she demanded the government to revoke the decision at the earliest.
The sit-in was also attended by CADA president H Priyokumar and vice presi-dent N Doren Singh.
Meanwhile, Apunba Nupi Lup (ANUL) Bishnupur District president L Pramo Devi said that legalisation of liquor is an attempt to demoralise the Manipuri society and could be considered as an invitation for the Third Nupi Lal.
She made the statement during a press conference held at ANUL's office at Bishnupur Thiyam Leikai on Monday.
Pramo said that the women of Manipur started the movement for prohibition of liquor since the 1970s, taking into account the domestic violence suffered by women and the ill-effects of the same in the society, which the government should be aware of.
The people wholeheartedly support the government's 'War on Drugs' campaign but it is unfortunate that the latter's focus was on legalising liquor.
Thus, ANUL will continue to stage protests and launch agitation until the government withdraws its decision, she stated.
The press conference was also attended by ANUL vice president N Bimola, secretary M Anita and other office bearers.
