Imphal, September 26 2022:
The United Chongthas has asked AMMOCOC to tender apology for claiming that Major Chongthamia belonged to Meitei Pangal community within five days and cautioned of initiating legal steps in case of failure.
The United Chongthas president Chongtham Tomba told media persons on Monday at his Keishamthong residence that AMMOCOC's claim about the valiant Manipuri soldier Chongthamia belonging to Meitei Pangal community not only misled people and wrongly translated historical facts but also incited hatred among different communities.
He then asked AMMOCOC to produce documents which could prove about Chongthamia belonging to Meitei Pangal and tender apology to the public if unable to do so.
According to Tomba, Major Chongthamia took part in the battle between British force and Manipur army when the British tried to arrest Bir Tikendrajit in the morning of March 24, 1891.In the Khongjom battle of Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 too, Major Chongthamia brought two cannons at Khongjom as a leader of the Manipur army and took part in the battle.
However, he got hit in firing by the British force and fell into the hands of the enemy.
He was then exiled to Andaman & Nicobar Islands after forfeiting all his properties but released from Andaman on May 12, 1896 and stayed at Brindaban for around two/three years before moving to Narayan Khamar village in Tripura where many people belonging to Chongtham clan settled.
After staying in Tripura for around ten years, Major Chongthamia passed away on January 17, 1908, Tomba said, adding that Chongthamia was born at Lalambung Makhong Chongtham Leikai.
