Locals set condition on release of Barrage water

While demanding to give prior and timely information before releasing water from the Dolaithabi Barrage to the people living in the downstream area, denizens of Heikakmapal Awang Leikai have cautioned of launching protest if authorities concerned do not provide the information.
Speaking to media persons at Keibi Heikakmapal Awang Leikai on Monday, one Okram Romeo said that due to scanty rainfall this year, the villages which are not covered by irrigation water supplied by Dolaithabi Barrage have been using water pumps to draw from the Iril River for agricultural purposes.
Due to the sudden release of water from Dolaithabi Barrage on Sunday, water pumps kept in the river have been flooded.
Even after requesting staff manning the barrage to inform the people before releasing the water, they declined to give assurance, he Contended, while adding that the government did not provide even a single water pump when they faced water scarcity.
Romeo urged not to repeat such act which could make the tiresome works of farmers go to waste and further cautioned of unwanted consequences if authorities concerned ignore plight of the local people.
