Thoubal, September 26 2022:
Meira Paibis of Khekman Lairembi Leikai and Awang Leikai staged a sit-in protest today against the Cabinet decision to legalize liquor in the State.
The protest held at Khekman Lairembi Leikai in Thoubal district was organised by Khekman Women Anti Drugs And Alcohol Organization in collaboration with Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization (Thoubal Ima) .
Speaking to media persons, a protester, Wangjam Roni stated that the decision of the State Cabinet to lift the prohibition on liquor was unfortunate.
Stating that drug abuse and alcoholism are one of the root causes of the social ills besieging the State, she appealed to the State Government to revoke the decision immediately.
"Taking illegal tax under the shadow of Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 to allow brewing of liquor by some people has rendered the prohibition act ineffective", she alleged.
She further urged the State Government to implement the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 properly instead of repealing the Act to save the future generation from the scourge of alcoholism.
