The 8th State Conference of the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), Manipur State Unit was held today at Heikham Kala Singh Memorial Community Hall, Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai.
Speaking at the occasion, BEFI Manipur president, Soram Bijoy said that the main agenda of the conference is 'Save Bank and Save the Nation' .
With regards to the history of banks in India, he shared that there were no efficient banks between 1947 till 1968 since it was run by few high caste people who used the money for their own good.
However a remarkable change was brought in the Indian banks history with the commendable initiative of nationalising some selected banks to overcome the drastic differences in the functioning of banks in different States across the country by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he added.
He went on to state that with the nationalization of banks, the public money was invested in developmental activities of the Nation thereby benefiting all.
Stating that the public are availing the benefits of more than one lakh banks in the country at present, he maintained that these banks are also providing employment to a number of people.
In view of the ongoing steps of privatising the nationalised banks by the incumbent Government, he maintained that such steps will lead the banks in a regressive state.
Enlisting the numerous demerits of such steps, he expressed that the masses will not be able to get the same benefits which they are getting now which will pose a major hindrance in achieving the vision of a developed and egalitarian Nation.
Therefore he appealed to all to 'save the banks of the country by standing firmly against privatisation of banks for the mere gain of elite classes' .
