Imphal, July 21 2022:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has questioned the government whether it does not want to have the commission for rectifying the wrongs of the government.
Speaking to media persons at his Lamphelpat office on Thursday, MHRC acting chairperson Khaidem Mani explained that in order to have a good government, people should give constructive suggestions and criticise the government, if the need arises.
Criticising the government led by CM N Biren is not wrong in order to improve its governance and as such the government should not arrest and intimidate those who are not in harmony with
the government's police during discussion programmes on TV channels, he opined.
While expressing doubt on commitment of government to strengthen the Commission, Mani decried that the government is not interested to address inadequacies besetting the Commission, which, he said, exist for protecting the rights of the people.
Informing that the Commission organised awareness programmes on human rights
in Ukhrul district from July 18 to 20, Mani continued that a meeting was also held with CSOs to discuss the inadequacies of the district.
Upon inspecting government offices, schools and health sectors, it was found that there is dearth of manpower and poor infrastructure in several government institutions.
There is lack of doctors and related staff in the district, he revealed, while adding that employees of several institutions including schools, who have been transferred to Ukhrul, are not present in the district in addition to district lacking quarter facilities for various departments.
Subsequently, a recommendation to fill up the inadequacies of the district will be sent to the government within a day or two, the acting chairperson added.
