Kakching, July 21 2022:
Kakching Municipal Council (KMC) caretaker chairperson Naorem Sanjitkumar has warned that stringent punishment as per the law would be initiated against people who dispose carcasses of pig, chicken, etc., into Shengmai river.
Addressing a press meet held at KMC office on Thursday, N Sanjitkumar denounced the action of some unknown people who threw carcass of a pig into Shengmai river causing panic amongst the public at a time when cases of African Swine Fever and Covid-19 are rising in the state.
Shengmai river is the major source of water for the people of Kakching and villages located along its banks.
It is also the source for Kakching and Keirak water supply schemes.
So, it is everyone's responsibility to keep the river clean, he emphasised.
Sanjitkumar recalled that in January 2021 with an aim to stop the practice of dumping of carcasses of animals and waste into Shengmai river and fishing by using toxic chemicals in the river, the District Administration and KMC in collaboration with Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organisation (JNGVO) Kakching, All Kakching Students' Union (AKSU), Kakching Khunnai Chaokhat-hanba Lup (KKCL) and other CSOs had held 'Save Shengmai River' campaign during which it conducted a boat rally and removed 25 pig carcasses from the river.
Unfortunately, some irresponsible individuals are still continuing such practices from time to time.
Example of which is the
pig carcass found in Shengmai river near Kha Manipur College on Thursday, he decried.
Sanjitkumar also pointed that such action is punishable under law and if anybody is found indulging in such acts in future, he or she will be punished in accordance to law.
Anyone who can give information about the culprits who dumped the pig carcass into Shengmai river or any such acts in future will be awarded Rs
5000, he announced.
